Youth In AsiaComposed and Arranged For Percussion By Mike MyersYouth In Asia was composed during the spring of 1995 and finished during the late fall. I got a piano patch by email one day from a fellow K2000 user on the Internet and began doodling around with it here in my studio. Many times great pieces are born out of such innocent beginnings. What ended up coming out that day was the chord progression and a little bit of the melody which make up this piece. I ended up trashing the piano patch, using a combination of two other piano patches and writing a melody to go on top of the chord progression. The finished product is presented here. As always, this piece features some mixed and odd meters which make music so much more interesting to me. Some of the chord progressions remind me of Focus, a progressive band which flourished in the early 70s. The solo vamp riff is reminiscent of the great Frank Zappa. This piece appears on my 1996 solo album Myriad .
